As the game starts, the dealer deals out two initial cards to each player, beginning with himself in an anti-clock wise direction. The cards can be dealt face up or upturned, depending upon the game. Once everybody on the table gets two cards each, the player sitting immediately left to the dealer will start the game. At each level of the game, the players can either choose to ‘HIT’ or ‘STAND’, depending on the value of cards in their hand. Here, hitting means to draw a new card and standing means that the player doesn’t want anymore cards. A player may stand with any hand near to 21 or below. However, if a player chooses to ‘hit’ and the total goes over 21, the player loses the bet or bust. In addition to this, a player must also know when to take insurance, surrender a hand, split hands or double the bet amounts.
On the dealer’s turn, the dealer must ‘hit’ if the value of his hand is less than 16 and stand if the value of his hand is 17 or more. Since blackjack is purely based on mathematical odds, the players must make calculated moves to better their odds of winning.
